Bringing It All Together

This journey started about a year ago. Now is the time to look back and review what has been learned, realized and understood. There are results and outcomes from the envisioning of the project to the implementation. Parallel to the degree project there is also another "project" going on, to me as significant as the work on this program and exerting great influence - my personal journey in the midst of everything else. Along the way challenges have been encountered, which became signposts of what is going on with me and in my world, which have been a great help for growing as a person. There have been breakthroughs and highlights bringing delight and excitement as well as encouragement to continue or adjust the path taken.

I am eager to look over the learning I wanted to do and the learning that actually took place, developing a map for my future learning, reading thorough portions of the outputs and journal I kept and reflecting upon the lessons learned.

I am looking forward, dear reader, introducing you to this project on the level of the project plan, the social and budget planning, an overview of the elements and tasks completed or currently in process and what the plans are for the coming years. Eventually I will share my view of the whole process, of action learning, of the Gaia University Methodologies and what has been achieved and finally evaluate my own work.

This whole project is for a masters degree in Integrative EcoSocial Design from the Gaia University. It is also several other things, and, using permaculture terminology, serves several functions:

  • Developing an existing residential property into a demonstration site for creating sustainable ways of living
  • Showcasing elements of green building, organic gardening, renewable energy usage, lifestyle choices, water conservation, environmental revitalization and building community.
  • Using documentation about this project in my professional portfolio for the work I am doing.
  • Learning new skills.
  • Doing some necessary maintenance work on our home and property.
  • Achieving more self-reliance in the area of food, water and energy.
  • Reducing our ecological footprint.
  • Forging new connections and weaving a network of relations with others.
  • Connecting with nature and its cycles.
  • Adding an individual effort, option and choice for a sustainable human culture to the work of initiatives like "Peak Oil", "Transition Towns", "Relocalization", "Climate Change", City Repair", "Ecocities", "Bioneers".
  • Inspire others to live aligned to nature in a way of their choosing.
  • Combining earth based, indigenous living traditions with current ecosocial thinking.
  • Following my dreams, having fun, joy and love in all our lives, spread the hope and excitement of appropriate stewardship of the earth.

I am just reading the book, called "Ancient Pact: The Element of Air" by Caryn Colgan and want to share a few things. One character in the book is asked what her mission is and she answers:

"I want to be a catalyst for waking humankind from its dream of separation and helping people connecting with their Divine nature".

Another character, who is asked what would happen if this mission would be successful, responds:

"People would be more compassionate and take better care of each other. Maybe we would even work together to stop global warming and deforestation".
