Survey
Tools & Results

This part of the survey lists potential tools, methods and resources that could be used for this project. For actual results and outputs of the survey narratives or links are provided. This overlaps with links on the left navigation menu, with text and links on other pages of the survey or resources listed in the appendix.

  • Mind maps
Turned out to be very useful to gather, structure and visually represent information and use as guide in compiling this output. I also started working on using it as a potential navigation tool.
  • Research
Explore possible resources for the project - literature, web sites, experts, past and current comparable projects, products, costs, etc. aggregated in lists, web pages and potentially database using the Internet, libraries, etc.
  • Comparable Projects
Research similar projects currently existing or from the past, locally as well as worldwide.
    • Path to Freedom. The best comparable project that is already 12 years in the making. Incredible what they have achieved. In Pasadena, California, USA.
  • Photos
Of the property, work in progress, the neighborhood, the town, the people involved, events, work parties, documents, etc.
    • Property. A few pictures taken in February 2007.
  • Drawings and Models
Draw sketches, design ideas, overlays, elements, etc.
  • Maps and Aerials
    From Google and other sources.
The following aerials are from Google Earth. Where possible the property is marked with a red rectangle. The first one is very washed out, due to the resolution available for that scale:
  • Articles
  • Lists
The following lists and charts are currently available in this spreadsheet (MS Excel) each in its own worksheet:
    • Indicators. Potential measurable sustainability indicators. Develop charts, data gathering methods and calculations.
    • Utility Usage 2006. Chart and graphic of usage of water, sewage, electricity, gas, street light, garbage and phone.
    • Lifestyle Choices
    • Info Resources
    • Behavioral changes. Ideas how to reduce ecological footprint by changing our behavior.
    • Local Resources of materials, information, etc.
    • Project Plan. Current list of all the different elements we are interested to potentially implement. The order (priority), the timeline, estimates for cost, financial resource needs, needs of external help from contractors or other, etc. will be added in the next phases.
    • Advisors. Potential advisors, mentors, specialists, experts, etc. and criteria for selection.
  • Learning Goals
  • Annotation System
    • Connotea. Stopped using it when I realized that there is no way to export the annotations in a "normal" format, like as text or for a spreadsheet, etc.
  • Journal
    • My IESD blog. Journaling about all sorts of related and unrelated things.
  • Schedules
  • Computer and Work Environment
For creating the outputs, planning purposes and making drafts, sketches, mind maps, lists and spreadsheets, to communicate, etc.
In working on this written report I noticed that I am using a certain setup on my computer. I have at least five Notepad files open at the same time:
    • The current main work file (the file I gathered all my writing for the output).
    • A notes file to which I add any thoughts as they come to my mind but don't quite fit in anywhere at the moment or things I don't want to forget and are for later.
    • A file that functions as a to do list, things to do to complete what (output) I am working on.
    • A document for the next project phase that receives everything that goes in a later project phase document.
    • An appendix file I use to add and maintain any appendices in list form.
Then I use several other programs:
    • Dreamweaver I use for composing web pages.
    • Filezilla, for uploading web pages and files.
    • MindManager for gathering thoughts and keeping me on track in writing.
    • Firefox pointing to the web pages of my IESD outputs, to Moodle, to an English/German dictionary page and other research pages.
    • MS Excel as needed.
    • Adobe Photoshop to prepare photos and graphics for the web site.
    • Skype is usually running in the background for communication, via chat or voice.
  • Publicity
Developing ideas for publicity and publications:
    • Create Sandpoint green map / brochure
    • Local media articles
    • Work-parties
    • Neighborhood and community potlucks
    • Site tours
    • Flyer development
    • Urban PC handbook for Sandpoint
    • Semi-public presentations
    • Start of relocation, Permaculture, etc. groups
    • Brochure, booklet
    • Little eco-booth and grocery stand in front yard
    • Signs in front yard of what this is all about and with explanations.
    • Create a sustainable household guide with lifestyle choices and products
    • Informational meetings at home
    • Interns
    • Teaching, training
  • Collecting Property Data
I hope in the future some of the following data of our property can be recorded and used for further design work and understanding what is going on:
    • Climate
    • Soil
    • Air
    • Water
    • Flora
    • Fauna
    • Wind strength and direction
    • Precipitation (rain, snow, due)
    • Sunny days
    • Cloudiness
    • Temperature
    • Air pressure
    • Air quality
    • Compost temperature
  • Interviews
Talk to the client (Berta and myself), neighbors, friends, family, people doing similar things, experts, etc. and take notes. Use PASE sheet where appropriate.
I actually did an interview with Berta, but can not find my notes.
  • Form Letters
Letter samples to introduce this project to advisors, the neighbors, the community, etc.
  • Observation
Spend time on the property - observing the different seasons and walk the neighborhood. Take pictures and write impressions down, make a slide show, reflections on the "feelings" and sensations surrounding the property, sleep a night outside, etc.
  • Notes review
Go through notes I made over the years about our property and our plans and integrate into outputs.
  • Intuition
Do some shamanic journeying on the intention and purpose of this project.
  • History
Property, town and area historical information from museum, old timers, archives, etc.
  • Site energetics
Look at the energetics of the property, energy lines, dowsing, talk/listen to the plants, animals, devas. Maybe place some crystals and stones on the property that function as energy and information collectors and transformers.
  • Support Group
    Form a support group.
